Each one of our students' journeys is as unique and intriguing as they are. We love to find out the who, what, when, where, and why of our student's stories!
Meet Mark from Florida. He’s here to practice his Spanish, which will be crucial in his future career in Commercial Construction!
💬 What brought you to Barcelona?
I came to Barcelona as part of a 3-month cultural immersion to practice the Spanish language and meet people from all around the world!
💬 Why did you decide to study Spanish?
Since 1513 Spanish has been widely spoken throughout the state of Florida. Many cities, towns and landmarks have Spanish names to this day. The language remains both a cultural influence and important means of social and economic interaction.
💬 Where’s your favourite spot in the city?
My favorite spot in the city thus far is definitely Spotify Camp Nou. Nothing quite beats the electricity of a football match in the largest stadium in Europe!
💬 What’s next for you?
After leaving Barcelona I will continue my language immersion for one month in San Sebastián followed by a month in Madrid! After returning to Florida I will begin my professional career in the field of commercial construction and development where communication in Spanish will be critical.
Say hello to Abigail from Washington state.
💬 What brought you to Barcelona?
I love traveling, and I’ve always wanted to learn Spanish, so Barcelona was perfect for both.
💬 Why did you decide to study Spanish?
My family speaks fluently, and I would love to be able to communicate with them. I also really want to teach Spanish at some point in my life.
💬 Where’s your favourite spot in the city?
Probably the beach. I love swimming and scuba diving and just being outside in the sun.
💬 What’s next for you?
I want to travel EVERYWHERE! So, probably travel more and hopefully land a job somewhere that I can teach Spanish.
Meet Ranjit, originally from India but has lived in Melbourne, Australia for many years!
💬 What brought you to Barcelona?
The pure desire to get out of the comfort zone and experience a new culture and learn a new language.
💬 Why did you decide to study Spanish?
Considering it’s one of the most spoken languages in the world, I’d like to use Spanish to meet new people and maybe in my profession too!
💬 Where’s your favourite spot in the city?
I love these places, early in the morning especially: Arc de Triomf, Parc Ciutadella and Sagrada Familia
💬 What’s next for you/what are your future plans?
Learn Spanish really well in a year or so, find a job in Spain preferably and stay in Europe for a few years. Also, to keep meeting new people and get inspiration from every new experience!
Meet Xiang, from Sichuan, China who followed her heart to Barcelona
💬 What brought you to Barcelona?
My story is quite ordinary, for love. Hahaha! My husband is from Barcelona. Due to the challenging job situation I faced in recent years (I used to work at a travel agency, and it was hard to do business during COVID), we thought it would be a good time to make some big changes. So, we decided to move to Barcelona last October.
💬 Why did you decide to study Spanish?
I am learning Spanish primarily to communicate with my husband’s family and also because I plan to live here and hope to find a job in the future.
💬 Where’s your favourite spot in the city?
In the city, I enjoy sitting on the steps outside the @museunacional. There are always talented musicians playing instruments and singing there. They are really good, and I feel so free when I sit there with other people, listening to music. And let’s not forget about the restaurants! Barcelona has a lot of excellent Asian restaurants, which provides a great sense of comfort when I feel homesick.
💬 What’s next for you?
I hope to reach a good level of Spanish proficiency by October so that I can start looking for a job.
Say hello to Anja, an NGO employee from Germany
💬 What brought you to Barcelona?
I always liked this fascinating, international city. I love the culture, the architecture, the people, the lifestyle, the sea etc. I really enjoy the great cultural offer and that you can discover something new around every corner.
💬 Why did you decide to study Spanish?
I’ve been learning Spanish on and off and once spent 3 months traveling in South America. But that was a long time ago, and I wanted to refresh my knowledge again. It’s such a great language!
💬 Where’s your favorite spot in the city?
At the beach – sun, sea
💬 What are your future plans?
My plans? Turning ideas into reality – like my idea at the beginning of the year to come to Barcelona every now and then.
