The popularity of the Spanish language is on the rise. With 572 million speakers worldwide, learning the language could be a serious personal and financial investment. Read on to see our reasons for why you should learn Spanish.
It’s easy to learn
Unlike French, Spanish is a phonetic language, meaning that there is a direct relationship between spelling and sound. Basically, what you see is what you say. Even though the grammar may be hard to master, knowing the basics requires little time and will get you far. Once you know the fundamentals, it is relatively easy to get your point across.
It could be your “gateway language”
Spanish is the most spoken of the Romance languages which include Portuguese, Italian, French, Romanian and Catalan. These languages all have Latin roots and, although very different, when you become fluent in one, you are already advancing in the learning of the others. As we said earlier, Spanish is an easy language to learn so it could be your key to learning others.
Travel smarter
Spanish is the official language in 20 countries. There are countless beautiful beaches, mountains, deserts and stunning landscapes spread throughout South and Central America as well as Spain. By speaking the local language, you’ll get more of an insider’s feel into what the country is really like, experience some real culture, perhaps even better food. You might also be appreciated more for making the effort and relieving the locals of the anxiety of trying to speak your language.
Make new friends
In a world dominated by English, people from non-English speaking countries are really grateful for the effort that foreigners make when they try to communicate in their local language. Spanish is the native language of almost all of the countries in South, and Central America, with an enormous presence in North America as well. If you are able to communicate in their language almost the entire continent is at your disposal. You will have the chance to encounter warm, kind, and charming people that will be delighted to share their stories with you.
It is internationally recognized
Spanish is an influential language in terms of political power in the world. Trade agreements, political strategies, Human Rights’ discussions are constantly handled in Spanish. Spanish is one of the six official languages of the United Nations, the other languages being Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, and English. It is also one of the official languages of the European Union. Therefore, in economic terms, learning Spanish is also a good investment.
Feast your mind on Spanish literature and cinema
Learning Spanish would also allow you to discover the richness of Spanish literature and cinema. For example, Cervantes’ “Don Quijote” is one of the best selling books in the world, and is considered influential in humanity’s cultural heritage. 11 Spanish-speaking writers have been awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. In terms of cinema, speaking Spanish will open up a whole new collection of motion pictures and will also be a good way to practice the language.
