What to know before you book
Prepare for immersion-based Spanish learning
Our teaching methodology is inspired by the linguist Stephen D. Krasher, who helped introduce the “immersion” idea with his 1982 research paper. Krasher found that students learn faster when they’re fully immersed in a language – compared to students learning in a traditional classroom setup.
At Speakeasy BCN, in-person immersion is the foundation of our teaching methodology and choice of only using native Spanish teachers. All course materials and interactions – including asking a teacher questions or talking to classmates – are encouraged in Spanish only.
Immersion can feel overwhelming at first. But if you’re placed only with other students of the same language level, you’ll all be learning at the same speed.
Understand your current Spanish ability
Before you start your course, we’ll ask you about your current Spanish level. This is important so that we can place you in a suitable Spanish course with other international adults at your same level.
But what if you don’t know your level?
We’ve developed an online level test that will estimate your current Spanish ability in minutes. If you book a course and feel your actual level is higher or lower than the class, don’t worry - you can talk to a student advisor and change levels at any moment.
Consider student visa support (non-EU students)
Most non-EU students can stay in Spain for up to 90 days as a tourist (often visa-free or with a Schengen visa), but if you plan to study in Barcelona for around 4 months or more, you’ll usually need a Spanish student visa. Requirements vary but commonly include proof of funds and health insurance, along with your course enrollment documentation.
If you book one of our long-term Spanish courses at Speakeasy BCN, you’ll be connected with a dedicated student advisor who will guide you through the student visa process and the documents you’ll need to prepare from your country of residence.
See the 9 important requirements for a successful student visa application here.
Browse student accommodation options
If you’re an international language student, you’ll need a place to stay during your time in Barcelona. It’s not always easy or affordable to use a short-term property rental (like Airbnb) for an extended period while learning Spanish.
Speakeasy BCN’s student advisors can help you compare four types of accommodation:
Student residence: Our accommodation partners give you access to 8 student residences across Barcelona.
Shared apartment: Find a room in an apartment in the neighborhood that suits you best, shared with other adult international students and professionals.
Private apartment: Choose from short-term, monthly, and yearly stays at a private apartment that suits your budget and preferences.
Local host: Take your Spanish immersion to the next level by staying with a local.
Set time aside for trips and activities
As an essential part of our immersive learning program, we supplement classes with weekly activities that connect you with Barcelona’s culture, people, and energy.
Unlike other schools that repeat standard activities, Speakeasy BCN has two dedicated activities coordinators who are international locals themselves with insider knowledge. They organize tailor-made outings, from gallery openings and cultural events to hidden local gems like cafés, bars, hiking trails, and excursions, so you can experience the city and surrounding region like a local.
Attending activities is optional. But we find that students who join end up learning Spanish faster and become more confident speakers in public situations.
Be sure Barcelona is the place for you
Barcelona is a bilingual city (Catalan and Spanish are both official), and this can make students hesitate to book a Spanish course here. They often wonder if Madrid or Malaga might be better for day-to-day practice.
In reality, Spanish is actually the dominant language in Barcelona. A study from the government of Catalonia found that Spanish is the habitual language for most residents, and 98% of people in Barcelona are fluent in Spanish.
In any case, the presence in Catalan hasn’t halted Barcelona’s popularity. In 2023, more international students were studying Spanish at FEDELE-approved schools in Barcelona than in Madrid.
