September is one of the nicest months of the year in Barcelona. Crowds of tourists have simmered down while the city's summer vibes continue on. It’s the perfect month to enjoy the city while the sun still shines bright into the evening.
Weather in September
After August’s oppressive heat and humidity have passed, temperatures in Barcelona become much more enjoyable. Temperatures range from 26 degrees Celsius to 20 degrees Celsius, you can’t have more perfect weather than that! The beaches are still popular in September but are noticeably less crowded than in June, July, and August. It’s still hot enough to head down to the beach and enjoy a swim in the sea without having to fight for a spot to put your towel down. There are at least nine to eleven hours of sunshine per day and minimal rainfall. Rain is more common towards October, so it’s not necessary to prepare for an unplanned rain shower in September.
Rooftop terrace bars
Enjoying a drink on a rooftop terrace with panoramic views are a must-do in Barcelona. They are usually found on top of luxurious hotels, but you don’t have to be staying in the hotel to access them. Be prepared for the steep price of drinks, but enjoying the VIP setting with amazing views of the city makes it well worth it. Why go in September? These rooftop bars tend to open just until the end of the summer and by October are closed, so take advantage of the last weeks to enjoy the sunny evenings and magical views. Enjoy a Feste major
Get a glimpse of Catalan culture by attending one of Barcelona’s neighborhood parties, of which the biggest occurs in September – La Mercè. Feste majors involve a mix of local traditions and events along with concerts and more modern shows and activities. Along with La Mercé which is held across Barcelona, in September, the districts of Barceloneta, La Ribera and Poblenou all hold their festa major party.
Catalonia’s national day, “La Diada”
“La Diada Nacional de Catalunya”, in Catalan, is celebrated on September 11th. On this day you will see demonstrations across the city, most concentrated in the center of the city. If you’re fascinated by Catalan independence, this is a great opportunity to see politics on the ground level, with people usually gathering in demonstrations along the main streets of Barcelona. Otherwise, entrance to some museums is free of charge on this day, such as the MNAC, the Museu d’Historia de Catalunya, and the El Born Cultural Center.
